Our Ask/Answer Q’s for Understanding Non-Fiction lesson plan teaches students how to more effectively ask and answer questions for a better understanding of nonfiction texts. During this lesson, students are asked to work collaboratively with a partner to read a nonfiction passage and list 10 questions and the answers related to the key details of the topic as they read. Students are also asked to read a paragraph and answer provided questions about it as they go, demonstrating that they can find the answers as they read, as opposed to going back after reading to answer questions.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate an understanding of key details in nonfiction text.
