Capitalization (Grades 1-3)

In our Capitalization lesson plan for grades 1-3, students learn about the differences between lowercase and uppercase letters and some general rules about when each are used and why. Students practice using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and when using proper nouns.

Our Capitalization lesson for grades 1-3 introduces students to the differences between lower-case letters and capital letters. Students who are already able to recognize the difference will begin to learn when and what to capitalize. Students are asked to identify correctly capitalized sentences, define and give examples of each capitalization rule, and choose whether a capitalized or lower-case letter belongs in a blank spot in a sentence.

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the difference between a capital and lower-case letter and use capitals correctly at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns.
