Our Solid Figures and Cubic Units lesson plan teaches students about how cubic units can be packed into solid figures and how that can help them conceptualize volume measurements. During this lesson, students are asked to draw unit cubes to fit into given rectangular prisms, demonstrating their understanding of the lesson material. Students are also asked to answer questions about solid figures and cubic units, including “Why is it a problem to have unit cubes overlapping when measuring volume?” and “Why is it a problem if unit cubes have gaps when measuring volume?”.

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to pack a solid figure with unit cubes without gaps or overlaps to understand volume.
