Our What is Democracy Lesson Plan introduces students to the concepts of democracy. This interactive lesson defines and lists characteristics of a democracy, and gives examples of the two types of democracies while incorporating activities that solidify and generalize understanding. During this lesson, students are asked to work as a group to read given scenarios and vote on them, as they would in a democracy. Students are also asked to use their creativity to create a poster encouraging people to vote, which they then share with the class, strengthening their public speaking skills.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to define and list characteristics of a democracy and give examples of the two types of democracies.
